Washington History

Washington was founded in 1839 and is the county seat of Washington County, one of the leading hog producing areas in the nation. Washington was the location of the first county hospital built west of the Mississippi River. Founded in 1912 in a basement and originally named Washington County Hospital, it’s now named Washington County Hospitals and Clinics. The original 3-story building was torn down in the summer of 2006 to build a new hospital. Washington also played host to a village of 300 Indians believed to be ruled by Chief Poweshiek until around 1840.
